Buying a Puppy? Buyer Beware:
Urgent Reminder that the Sale of Dogs under Eight Weeks of Age is Illegal Penal Code 597z

San Bernardino County- The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley recently received a complaint from an unsuspecting buyer who responded to an ad selling designer breed puppies. That same buyer and her family is now heartbroken after buying a sick and underage puppy from a seller whose intentions were only to sell her a sick puppy, cash only, and disappear. The buyer noticed the puppy was sick right away, after several attempts from a local veterinarian, the puppy, only 4 weeks old, was not thriving or responding to treatment, the family was left with no choice but to have the puppy, named Pinky Bell, humanely euthanized.

The buyer forwarded her concerns regarding the seller to the Humane Officers attention. After setting up a puppy buy sting meeting with the seller, the Humane Society discovered five toy breeds puppies, ages 4-5 weeks of age, all appeared unhealthy and one puppy was in danger of dying. The seller is also suspected of raising cockfighting roosters. "During our undercover puppy sting, the seller offered for sale a prize fighting rooster to our undercover investigator" Simmons said. "The rooster had recent injuries from a suspected illegal cockfight."

The seller claimed ownership of the roosters and signed them over to The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley, where they were humanely euthanized.

The puppies, still recovering and under veterinary care, are being held as evidence.

The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley strongly urges buyers to beware of any seller who insist on meeting at a gas station or minimart. Be cautious of sellers who insist on cash only and cannot provide a heath certificate for the puppy. Many of these underage puppies sold are being smuggled over the border from Mexico in inhumane conditions, some will die enroute, the survivors are sold underage and often sick to hard working families. Puppy mills exist all over the country, where the dogs live in small, dirty cages their entire life, only to breed litter after litter, this is a cruel life. Please adopt form your local animal shelter.

Anyone with information regarding buying sick and underage puppies, please contact Officer Simmons.

The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley will forward a request for charges filed against the seller and owner of the puppies and roosters.
