Times are tough and everyone is looking to hire veterinarians, right? Well, the Humane Society of San Bernardino is no different.

Due to the veterinarian shortage, we recently promoted Apollo the golden retriever from our clinic emotional support animal to Dogtor… but it’s really not working out and we desperately need help.

Our low-cost clinic serves this area by performing over 3,000 vet exams and 7,000 spay/neuter surgeries a year for our low-income clients. Our medical team currently consists of 3 RVTs, 8 VAs, and Apollo, who periodically visits the clinic.

 The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley, a non-profit organization with a mission to help the animals in the community and to reduce pet overpopulation, is seeking a full time/part time Veterinarians. We are a private non-profit facility, not an animal shelter or animal control agency. We have been dedicated to reducing the pet overpopulation problem in the inland empire for over 50 years.

The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley is a 17,000 sq. ft. Veterinary Clinic and Education Center, providing quality low cost spay/neuter services and minor surgical procedures to over 10,000 dogs and cats a year. The clinic consists of two double surgery suites and 5 exam rooms. Our Wellness clinic provides vaccinations, health check-ups, preventive care, minor illness treatment, as well as a strong focus on client education.

Registered Veterinary Technician

SUMMARY:

Provide medical care and assistance to animals at the clinic. This includes animals here for surgery, vaccinations, examinations and euthanasia. Support the role as an RVT to include being called upon to work in surgery/recovery areas and perform miscellaneous duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administers vaccines, medications, etc.
  • Performs a variety of diagnostic laboratory tests (i.e.: parvovirus, feline leukemia, skin scrapings, ear cytology, etc.)
  • Checks in animals / conducts pre-operation examinations, including weigh-ins, tranquilizing, etc.
  • Prepare animals for surgery, including anesthetizing, intubation, cleaning incision site, etc.
  • Performs euthanasia ensuring written euthanasia policies are adhered to while implementing euthanasia in a timely manner and to the highest procedural level.
  • Clean up surgery and examination rooms at the end of the day.
  • Conducts routine vaccination appointments and counsels owners on basic pet care
  • Performs suture removals and nail trimmings
  • Receives inventories and medical supplies under the direction of the Clinic Manager.
  • Transports Patients from cage to prep and surgery tables and back to cage while adhering to procedural guidelines.
  • Assists recovery personnel as needed.
  • Assists with surgery when needed, under direct supervisor of a veterinarian.
  • Operates heart monitor/ pulse ox consistently on each patient during surgery.
  • Observes patients during recovery and assists with their release to owners, as needed.
  • Renders emergency treatment to animals in need of emergency care.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid certificate of registration as a Registered Veterinary Technician issued by the California State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine. Minimum of one year experience working with animals in a veterinary hospital. Knowledge of, or ability to learn humane animal handling, restraint, and confinement procedures; familiarity of various animal breeds; familiarity of common animal diseases; safety precautions of working around animals. Ability to read, write, communicate and follow instructions.

SUMMARY:

This position assists the Executive Director in performing and fulfilling a variety of technical, clerical, internal and external responsibilities as delegated. General duties to include; complete day-to-day bookkeeping duties; preparing written communications on behalf of the organization; HR benefit enrollment: answering phones, data entry and functions as the Society Receptionist when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:

High School graduate or equivalent. Proficient with Quick Books and office experience required. HR experience a plus. Must be computer literate and have the ability to utilize software applications as provided by the Humane Society including the complete Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks.

Must have a high attention to detail, complete confidentiality, possess good writing skills and be able to prepare corporate communications in a timely, accurate and efficient manner. Must be able to react calmly and quickly under stress. Must demonstrate the ability to handle a variety of responsibilities with minimal supervision. The Veterinary Assistant supports the doctors in ensuring quality care for all pets, advocates for pets, educates clients on the aspects of pet health and ensures a safe and effective clinic environment. The veterinary staff must build positive, professional relationships with clients and staff members.

Act as the extra eyes, ears and hands for the doctor to ensure quality pet care and to maximize the doctor’s productivity. Leads the medical team through the Service Sequence and communicates with other staff to maintain the flow of patients.

Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times. Includes performing procedures that do not require doctor assistance, completing preparatory work for other procedures, and ensuring that clients and pets are comfortable in the clinic, and monitoring surgical patients.

Educate clients about preventive care, pet health needs, any diagnosis and treatment, HSSBV services and other issues.

Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical records.

Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and staff members by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols and maintaining clean, organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs.

Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety data Sheets quickly.

Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Effectively communicate in the English language both in writing and orally. Use proper medical terminology when speaking and writing. Know and use proper medical and business abbreviations.

Add, subtract, multiply and divide, and to compare rate, ratio and percent.

Able to operate computer software system in an efficient manner.

Able to locate medical records in computer as well as paper records.

Able to see a minimum of 30 client visits per day.

Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

Solve problems involving several variables.

Regularly stand, reach and feel with hands and arms.

Frequently walk, stoop, kneel or crouch, and to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Be confident around pets (i.e. dogs, cats, birds, reptiles etc.)

Veterinary Assistants must be a High School graduate or equivalent training.

Have a basic knowledge of animal diseases and conditions including domestic animals, exotic animals and wildlife.

Ability to operate a vehicle under all types of weather road conditions.

Ability to work when and where needed, including field disasters or emergency response for extended periods of time.

Must be Euthanasia certified or willing to participate in Euthanasia certification training.
